A large majority of Americans see the war in Iran as contrary to the country's interests and too expensive, in soldiers' lives as well as in dollars. It was poorly sold: nobody explained to them why it concerned them, and they pay for it every week at the pump. The divide now runs through Trump's own camp, between the evangelicals, the party's pro-Israel base, and the "America First" current, hostile to any war abroad.
