Santa Fe shooting: the gun debate reignited

i24NEWS ·

Live from New York on i24NEWS Newsroom Week-end, the day after the shooting at Santa Fe high school in Texas. "Here we go again" with the debate over the Second Amendment, the inalienable right of Americans to own guns, with soft legislation in some states that sometimes allows people to "stroll around with a 9 mm on their belt". That is the case in Texas, where residents of Santa Fe were furious to see at the scene a man in a red "Make America Great Again" cap, flag in hand and pistol at his waist. A perfectly legal scene that enrages liberal America, which is calling for restrictions on carrying guns after repeated shootings, from Columbine in 1999 to Parkland in February 2018. The law has not changed, it has even loosened on buyer registration and private sales. After politicians' "thoughts and prayers", Donald Trump had already announced measures after Parkland and Las Vegas, before backing down in front of the NRA, the powerful gun lobby. Six months before the midterm elections, Congress is unlikely to pass laws that could cost senators and representatives their seats.
