Gaza: the UN Security Council meets in an emergency session
i24NEWS ·
Live from New York for i24NEWS, the day after the deadliest day of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict since 2014, ahead of the emergency UN Security Council meeting requested by Kuwait and unofficially called for by the Palestinian delegation, an observer member of the United Nations. From a diplomatic source, David Benaym obtained Kuwait's draft resolution and its four points: an independent investigation into the previous day's events at the border, an end to the blockade of the Gaza Strip, a call on both parties to act with restraint to avoid escalation, and the phrases that almost always appear in a text on Israel: the status of Jerusalem must remain unchanged and any unilateral decision, "meaning the United States" recognizing it as capital, would be "null and void". The text also reaffirms the importance of a peace process and a two-state solution. "Nothing in this statement reflects the Israeli demand to condemn Hamas", while Danny Danon, Israel's ambassador to the UN, had asked the Council to denounce the war crimes of the terrorist organization, which he holds responsible for every death at the border. If the text went to a vote, which is unlikely, it would meet the veto of Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the UN. Correspondence by David Benaym on i24NEWS in French, May 15, 2018.
