Silent disco, New York's silent nightclub

i24NEWS ·

The 3 Minutes POP at night, at Brookfield Place on Manhattan's west side: "welcome to an open-air nightclub that will absolutely not bother the neighbors, at least as far as sound goes." The principle is simple: on site, you get a wireless headset and tune in to one of three DJs competing for your ears: hip-hop, classical, 80s or disco. The headphones change color depending on the music, "so you know whether your friends on the dance floor are moving to the same rhythms as you." For Angel, from Brooklyn, it is "an exceptional event": "what better than coming here after a long week of work." As a bonus this year, artist Jason Hackenwerth, known for his monumental sculptures of imaginary creatures made of inflated balloons, occupies the space with three multicolored giants on the banks of the Hudson: with the headphones and the techno beats, his installation "Animal Soul" makes for a rather psychedelic scene. Similar parties exist in the subway, on some rooftops and even in winter on the Central Park ice rink. Quiet Clubbing, the silent nightclub, takes place all summer all over New York; the schedule is on the city parks website and the headphones are free: "first come, first served."
